Books, Flash Cards, and Reading Formats for Babies and Toddlers
If you're buying a book for a young child and you're not sure which format fits their age, this page collects everything so you can compare. Board books, bath books, stroller books, flash cards, and bookmarks - all in one place.
How to Pick a Format by Age and Situation
For newborns, stroller books (crinkly pages, clip-on strap) and bath books (waterproof, water-activated color) are the earliest formats. Board books with thick cardboard pages work from birth for reading aloud and start being self-directed around 12-18 months.
For ages 1-3, themed board book sets are the standout. Each set contains four mini books on a shared topic - feminists, scientists, artists, travelers, park rangers, and more. These are the most-gifted baby product we make because the topics feel more intentional than generic counting or animal books.
Flash cards on a metal ring cover ABCs, first words, counting, and bilingual vocabulary. At 12-18 months, use them as picture cards (you name the images). By ages 2-3, kids start recognizing and naming on their own.
Board Books vs. Bath Books vs. Stroller Books
Board books are for dry reading - bedtime, lap time, car seats, daily use. Thick pages survive chewing, throwing, and being read 200 times.
Bath books are for the tub and water play. Water-activated ink reveals hidden illustrations when dipped - colors bloom, animals appear. They dry between baths and work as sensory toys outside the tub too.
Stroller books clip to a handle and use textured or crinkly pages for on-the-go sensory play. The strap prevents dropping during walks.
For the wider baby products page or the under-2 range, those pages add puzzles, play sets, and more to the mix.
Books as Gifts
Board book sets are the safest baby gift - the packaging looks good, the topics feel thoughtful, and they're useful from birth through age 3+. For art and education themed gifts, books covering diversity, art history, and real-world figures stand out from generic baby books. The Andy Warhol board books use original pop art illustrations - a distinctive option for art-loving families.
For creativity-focused families, pairing a board book set with a coloring roll or painting kit makes a combined gift that covers reading and making.
Bookmarks with illustrated designs round out the collection as a small add-on gift for older kids who read chapter books. For more on magnetic play sets as a companion gift alongside books, the magnetic toys page covers the full range.
Materials
Board books use food-safe coatings and FSC-certified paper. Bath books use waterproof, food-safe materials. Flash cards use sturdy cardstock on metal rings. Every product meets CPSIA, ASTM, and CE safety standards.
