Scratch and Sniff Puzzles
Puzzles that smell like what they look like. A pizza puzzle smells like pizza. A strawberry cone smells like strawberries. The scents are baked into the coating and last for the puzzle's full lifetime.

9Puzzles That Smell Like What They Look Like
A puzzle of a strawberry cone smells like strawberries. A pizza puzzle smells like pizza. A hot cocoa scene smells like hot cocoa.
The scents are printed directly into the puzzle's coating. Kids scratch lightly on specific pieces and the scent releases. The artwork tells you what to expect; the smell confirms it.
Most kids react to scratch-and-sniff puzzles louder than to any other format we make, because the multisensory part is the unexpected piece. They've done puzzles before. They've seen artwork before. They haven't done a puzzle that fills the kitchen with the smell of vanilla cake.
How the Scratch-and-Sniff Mechanic Works
The scents are baked into the puzzle's printed coating, not applied separately.
Kids scratch lightly on specific shaped pieces - usually 6 special pieces per puzzle - and the scent releases. The coating holds the scent for the puzzle's full lifetime; multiple scratches over multiple sessions don't wear it out.
A 60-piece puzzle typically includes 3 different scents, each repeated twice, for variety. Kids identify which piece carries which smell as part of the puzzle experience.
Scratch and Sniff Puzzle Sizes
Two main sizes:
- 48-piece mini scratch and sniff puzzles - shaped puzzles in small boxes for ages 4 and up. Single-scent format, often a food or drink theme matched to the artwork (watermelon popsicle, hot cocoa penguin, strawberry cat cone).
- 60-piece standard scratch and sniff puzzles - rectangular puzzles in standard boxes for ages 4 and up. Multi-scent format with 3 different scents per puzzle. Themes include cat cafes, food festivals, and bakery scenes.
For the 48-piece minis specifically, Mini Puzzles covers the wider mini-format catalog beyond just scratch-and-sniff. For larger pieces and longer sessions, Jigsaw Puzzles for Kids covers the broader catalog.
Themes That Work With Scratch and Sniff
Food and drink themes dominate because the scent-to-image match is intuitive. Cat cafes with strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. Food festivals with pizza, bacon, and vanilla. Donut shops, bakeries, ice cream parlors.
Non-food themes work too when the artwork suggests a scent kids can name. Garden scenes with floral notes, holiday scenes with hot cocoa or peppermint, bunnies with bouquets.
The unifying rule is that kids should be able to predict which piece will smell like what before they scratch it. The surprise is the scent intensity, not the scent identity. For broader animal artwork in standard formats, Animals & Nature Puzzles, Games & Books covers the wider catalog.
When Scratch and Sniff Works Best as a Gift
The format pairs especially well with kids 4 to 7 who've outgrown novelty toys but aren't ready for complex puzzles. The scratch-and-sniff layer adds enough novelty to keep them engaged through assembly.
Stocking stuffers, party favors, and birthday gifts for "the kid who has every puzzle already" are the strongest use cases. For more travel-sized puzzles built for the road, Travel-friendly Toys & Puzzles for Kids covers the wider on-the-go catalog.
Materials and Safety
Greyboard with 90% recycled paper for the pieces. 70% recycled paper for the outer box. Nontoxic, soy-based inks for the standard color layer. The scent coatings are food-safe and tested to CPSIA, ASTM, and CE safety standards for the listed age range. Scents are synthetic but safe for skin contact and accidental tasting.
